What to do if you find a fawn

For the first few weeks of the fawn’s life, the doe will allow it to nap in a safe spot while she stays close by.  Unless a fawn has obvious injuries, is walking around crying, or is lying next to a dead doe, it should never be moved.

These young deer are very sensitive to the foods they consume, and to the stress they feel when around humans.   Capture Myopathy, or physiological imbalances that result from stress, is a common cause of death in fawns that have been taken by humans.

Fawns need a specialized formula and a variety of high-quality plants.  If they eat anything else, they may not be able to digest it properly, which will result in death.  Do not feed fawns.  Call San Diego Fawn Rescue immediately so proper care and feeding can be administered.

If you come across an orphaned or injured fawn, please call San Diego Fawn Rescue at

858-603-0170 or 760-443-9697, and someone will immediately come to retrieve it.
